Visit With Respect resources from Bears Ears Partnership

SORP · September 16, 2026

The Visit With Respect resources from Bears Ears Partnership are designed to help visitors understand how to responsibly experience a landscape with significant cultural, archaeological, and ecological resources.

The campaign includes several types of resources:

  • 20 visitor education tips: Short, memorable guidance covering topics such as staying on established trails and roads, avoiding contact with rock imagery and ancestral structures, leaving cultural belongings and fossils in place, keeping dogs away from archaeological sites, packing out waste, and not sharing GPS locations of sensitive sites. The tips use icons and concise messaging so they can be easily understood and remembered.
  • Visit With Respect videos: Short videos reinforce individual VWR principles and provide another way to communicate responsible visitation practices.
  • Ambassador program and training: Bears Ears Partnership trains volunteers to serve as Visit With Respect Ambassadors, providing visitor education directly on the landscape. Ambassadors are positioned at frequently visited locations to have conversations with visitors about respectful recreation and protecting sensitive sites.
  • Youth education: The Junior Ambassador Booklet is a self-guided resource for children ages 6–12. It combines science, human history, and Visit With Respect messages and encourages young visitors to share responsible visitation practices with friends and family.
  • In-person interpretation and displays: The Bears Ears Education Center has a Visit With Respect display that provides visitors with information before they head into the landscape. The campaign has also been extended through signage and partner materials in the region.
